Why I'm Learning to Pause

This year, the chocolate boutique I founded turns 25.

I expected a milestone like that to feel like an achievement. Instead, it felt like a question. Twenty-five years of birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, apologies, thank-yous, a quarter century of moments that people trusted us to help them express. And when I finally paused long enough to look at all of it, I noticed something I had somehow never said out loud:

Nobody ever needed the chocolate.

What they needed was to tell someone I see you. I remember. You matter to me. The chocolate was simply the form that message took, something made by hand, given by hand, meant to be shared. For 25 years I thought I was in the business of chocolate. I was in the business of connection all along.

Chocolate is the vessel. Human connection is the purpose.

Once I saw that clearly, I couldn't unsee it. And it changed what I wanted to do next.

Because the thing about connection is that it requires the one resource we've all quietly stopped protecting: presence.

We move fast. We answer messages while half-listening to the people in front of us. We schedule everything except stillness. The moments that matter don't announce themselves,  they need space to happen, and space is exactly what our lives no longer leave.

So I decided to build some. Not a product. A practice.

I call it The Pause. Every Sunday at 10:00 AM, I sit down and write a short, honest reflection, on life, on connection, and yes, sometimes on chocolate, because after 25 years it's how I understand the world. Nothing to buy. Nothing to do. Just a few minutes, at the same moment each week, to slow down and return to what matters.

This is the first one. It's about why.

The next ones will be about everything else, the things I'm learning, the questions I'm sitting with, the small ordinary moments that turn out to be the whole point.
