The Pause #9: 🍫 I said no to something beautiful

Dear Chocolover,

A few weeks ago, a new spirits brand approached me about collaborating on chocolates infused with their liquor.

The idea was beautiful. I could already taste what we might make together.

But as our conversations unfolded, I began to see that bringing it to life would be more complicated than it had seemed in my mind. Our rhythm, our values, our visions; they weren't as aligned as I first thought.

I also realized the collaboration would ask for time and creative energy my own projects needed; the ones waiting quietly for me to make room for them.

After weeks of reflection, I said no.

That no gave them room to find a partner better suited to their vision. It gave me back the time to honor my own.

Time is the one thing I can't make more of. As I grow older, I give more of my intention to the road than to the destination.

An opportunity can be beautiful and still not be right for us. Being honest about that, early, and out loud; spares us both a great deal of quiet disappointment.

Every time we say no to something that doesn't align with our vision, we make room for something that does. Sometimes that no is the very thing our own dreams have been waiting for.

And when we offer it with honesty and care, it becomes a gift to the other person, too. We give each other the clarity to move forward.

Maybe it's a project that has stopped feeling like yours. A yes you gave too quickly. An invitation you keep hoping will cancel itself.
